pheasant and landscape sketches, gouache
Last week, I spent a couple of hours working with the same palette of warm, summery colors with gouache in my sketchbook.
These paintings were quick and dirty, with little attention to any glazing over an underpainting layer or anything fancy, but I was pretty pleased with how they turned out with my colors limited down to just eight.

As with most of my color schemes, this one started by centering around a color I still had plenty of dry on the palette. Bright, kind of dull orange, in this case! I wanted to do something that was still mostly warm, so I added some pinks and yellow. I chose teal for my cool color and darkest dark, because it contrasts with the orange. This makes the dark look really dark, and also creates some really interesting lavender shades when combined with pink.
The colors remind me of a cabana, so that’s what I thought of them as when I was mixing!
