Last week, I did an entire two-page spread of snails in a new watercolor sketchbook. I think that they’re adorable, fun-to-draw creatures with tons of personality. However, I think I did these blue and purple snails because I’ve been doing a lot of waiting around for big news and it has me feeling, well – sluggish!
I used metallic silver watercolors in places for both. This always looks cool in person, but won’t ever read shiny or reflective on screen! The page above started with the group of flowers, as I was testing colors and cleaning off my brush.
I couldn’t help but add a couple of additional snail studies while I waited for parts of the first painting to dry. I like them overall, except the bottom-right fellow with the grass is kind of wonky. First, I sketched these with watercolors, but once they were dry, I used colored pencils to add the details. I really love the textured effect that this can give. It’s finding its way into more and more of my watercolor pieces.
