A new season always feels like a good opportunity for a little adjustment. To me, that meant re-dedicating to my goal of hand-drawing or painting something every day. With all of the designs that I’m trying to polish up, drawing with actual ink or a brush keeps falling off of my to-do list. This past week, I realized that a lot of my problem is my sketchbook. Or, rather, the size of the sketchbook that I’ve been trying to use. It’s a big 9″ by 12″ pad, which is just too much space for me to cover in the amount of time I want to spend doodling there every day.
I’ve ended up moving my daily drawing warm-ups to a book with pages about the size of index cards – a beautifully-made little hardcover book filled with watercolor paper. Suddenly it felt like something I should have done a long time ago! I can fill a whole page and get my creative brain going without ending up spending all day polishing something up. It’s wonderful.
To celebrate this miniaturization of my real-life sketchbook, I wanted to give a little tour of the first finished room in my mini-house. In the style of an old manor house where every room has a name, I’ve decided to call it the “Blue Room.”
Overall, I’m satisfied with how this cozy little attic room came together. While I worked, I came across a ton of things that I’m doing differently for the room next door, like really thinking ahead about the best order to do things. My collection of minis is hiding a ton of imperfections like an extra-weathered hardwood floor and mistakes lining up the wallpaper pattern, but I would still love painting in this little studio/bedroom!
