Today’s sketch is an illustration of a piece of old, crumbling statuary from the edifice of an old medieval building. Mossy and weathered, it shows a stag-bird creature that was probably part of a sponsor’s coat of arms. Called a peryton, this creature’s only special ability was that it cast a human shadow (unless it had taken a human life).
With most of the details coming from the top layer of colored pencil, this sketch came together pretty quickly, without much fussing with watercolor washes. I feel like I just posted a painting in the same color palette, but in addition to being one of my “color comfort zones”, these hues just have me thinking about spring and sunshine while it’s still really gray!
