Oak Leaves, Repeating

digital painting, homemade wallpaper

Today’s post has the result of a challenge that I presented to myself: make my own Morris-style wallpaper for a mini scene. This is what I like to call a “double dip” – something that contributes to more than one active project. In this case, it’s like a multi-dip: I got to practice designing patterns, and I got to make something that I would have otherwise purchased (dollhouse wallpaper). Eventually, I want to be able to use this in other places, too (I’m coming for you, Spoonflower). But I worked on this image mainly because it’s something that really pushed my new graphics card capabilities.

I already had this pattern in the works, and it didn’t take very long to cobble together. This is because there was a lot of copying and pasting, which meant that it was a pretty simple drawing with a very giant file. To begin with, I found some oak leaf reference images I liked and chose a color palette to mimic the 19th century arts and crafts style of my inspiration. Then, I pretty much just went nuts with copy and paste, collaging everything to look like a woodblock print.

The things that I regret about this design are mainly color things, but I like it enough overall that it’s already printed out and glued onto the walls of my new miniature room box. I would take pictures, except that it’s pitch dark out already. I eventually want to do some more of these, with other plants. For now, however, I have other more important projects on the table now that I’m back in business.

I’ll be back soon with… more oak leaves?! Yes, actually. See you later!
