Today’s drawing is a small pencil sketch of a tarot card, showing a mule-person as the four of cups. It’s the third similar card that I’ve dawn as I’ve been plugging away at other more serious projects, just to blow off steam for fun. They’re really fast to do, since I’m drawing them at actual size, and they remind me of a few years ago when I was making and sending art trading cards.
In a tarot deck, this card represents boredom, dissatisfaction, discontentment, and weariness. It indicates a sense of feeling out of sorts with your circumstances or lifestyle, and perhaps a need for a change of perspective or scenery. I chose a mule to represent this card mainly because it’s an animal that lives a domestic life and has a reputation for discontent. However, as cross-breeds of donkeys and horses, mules also exist in an awkward genetic gray area and are usually infertile. I thought that this was good symbolism for an archetype that is generally about finding oneself uncomfortable in their circumstances.
I always pull a card at random when I do a tarot illustration, so this sketch wasn’t meant to reflect my mindset, but since I have been experiencing technical difficulties again, it also kind of does. I’m back in business today, and things are going well so far, but I feel like I’m already starting the week behind in my progress. They only thing to do it get back to it, so this afternoon will be all printing and cutting and adjusting things in Photoshop.
I’ll be back soon with updates and a drawing of my imaginary stationery premises!
