It’s Lips

a whole sketchbook page of lips

While I’m working on the next sheet of stickers and a floral alphabet, I had a day last week where I just wanted to practice drawing something a little challenging. I chose lips, and used it as an excuse to fill a whole sketchbook page up with different mouth expressions.

One of my favorite types of sketchbook exercises is “whole page of a thing”. It really lets you dig into little variations and differences on one shape or a theme. Lips aren’t basic, either, although they might seem deceptively simple. There are all sorts of interesting things happening with fat and muscle that create little dips and planes.

There are so many anatomical studies that I could use a brush-up on that I’m probably going to repeat this exercise soon. It’s totally coincidental that all these lips are showing up right before Valentine’s Day, I guarantee that the next time I post a page of these drawings, it won’t be “feet for Arbor Day” or whatever.
