I drew this terrifying little lady the last time that I was camping – which was several years ago now! She just popped up in some old drawings I was sorting through, and fits the season and is so spooky that I wanted to share her.
My husband and I occasionally take trips during the Fall when the weather is crisp and colors change (Autumn leaves, especially in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, can be stunning). On that trip, we rented a state park cabin along the shore of Lake Superior in October, when the Autumn leaves really were spectacular. It was very rustic, and involved carrying water, keeping wood in the stove, and late-night trips through the dark to an outhouse. You had to walk a while to get to the cabins in the first place, so there was a general overall feeling that we could be living in some forested fantasy world.
Given that I was also reading some spooky stories at the time, this drawing of a hag at an old stone well just sort of tumbled out of my head.
It seems to be too balmy and wet for really vibrant flaming red and orange colors this year. That probably influenced the way that I added color to the background when I scanned it yesterday for posting – which capture the colors of this particular season. Sometimes I aim at a spot between realism and abstraction and have a hard time getting there, but I’m happy with this drawing because I think I did that while keeping it pretty loose and simple.
