The squares on the left are all experiments with different watercolor wash techniques. Today, I flipped to this page of the sketchbook and couldn’t stand how empty the other half of the page looked with the squares of color all alone. I doodled the character in the top right, and realized at some point that I was kind of personifying the spirit of the color swatch. By the time I got to sketching the figure at the bottom, I had decided that these were class-photo-style portraits, and that I had done each of my color swatches as 90s middle schoolers. I added their handwriting on top of the swatch, because it seemed fun, too. The anatomy is pretty awful, but I definitely like this page better now with the new friends.
