It’s that time of year again. The time of year when I’m compelled to draw or paint some sort of bear in pajamas. There’s just something about the crisp, cold air of the turning seasons that makes my brain jump to this over and over, for no reason I can explain except that I must find it fun. There’s this guy, for instance, that I posted back in April.
The pages in my sketchbook are more or less experiments with the paper in my new sketchbook to see how it handled an application of gouache. Gouache (pronounced like “goo-wash”) is an opaque watercolor paint that has a pretty quick drying time, and an almost chalky matte finish. With the right technique, it can produce satisfyingly crisp shapes. But not this time. My sketch was too tiny and complicated for my current selection of big ol’ brushes, and to be honest, I liked today’s bear better before I decided to paint him.
Good thing I have a backup!
My third bear is a pen sketch from a really old sketchbook, and was inspired by lazy days at home with my husband. It’s a kind-of self portrait, with big hoodie energy. Also because those panda slippers are based on a beloved pair that I owned in real life. They had exactly those surprised/horrified eyes, which I find hilarious.
That’s all. I’ll be back this weekend with some figure drawing doodles!
