Auntie Amalthea

Graphite drawing of a goat woman crowned before a backdrop of blossoming peonies.
graphite on paper

Today I’m posting the graphite under drawing for one of the six pieces that I’m getting ready for my first series of prints. I scanned this before I went back to the physical drawing with a layer of marker, then scanned it again to do the final color corrections and adjustments in Photoshop. Right now, I’m repeating this process with each image, getting it just right so that I can start to mess with printing proofs!

This illustration is inspired by the Greco-Roman mythological figure Amalthea – the “tender goddess” who nursed the infant Zeus after he was smuggled away to avoid being devoured by his father. She is associated with goats and bees, milk and honey. I have shown her engaged happily in needlework because I wanted to keep a soft and pretty aspect to what may otherwise read as pretty alarming sort of character.
