Winter Garden

Gardening is the most recent non-art hobby that I’ve fallen in love with. Growing things is something I’m pretty bad at, historically, but with practice and persistence, I’ve managed to get kind of okay! I have several plants that have lasted for years now, and I’ve done some fun and exciting things like propagate them from cuttings.

This year, I’m experimenting with forcing some leftover flower bulbs indoors, and was so excited when they all started to shoot up that I illustrated the scene! This sketch has both colored pencil and colored felt tip pens sketched over a watercolor wash.

For comparison! The green shoots were barely there at first.

It’s only been a week since I finished this sketch, but my flower bulbs have grown like gangbusters since then. Soon I think that I’ll have a bunch of little daffodils to draw!
