These little watercolor and gouache sketches are inspired by the changing season, which has me bundled up in layers wherever I manage to land with my work. I blow into my fingers and put on and take off a series of cardigans all day. It is, as my husband and I would say, “very November” here at the moment. In Michigan, that means chilly and drizzly and gray!
I light a lot of candles at this time of year, drink a lot of tea, and paint with lots of warm colors. It’s one of the little things that helps when the dusk starts creeping in mid-afternoon.
The group of mushroom folks is a doodle that I planned on using to practice using watercolor and gouache (opaque watercolors) together. I wanted some simple shapes to play with, and mushroom guys are always a personal favorite. They’re just so cute and fun. I imagine that the older one is telling the young mushrooms some sort of unlikely story about beetles.
On the right is a very quick study of an apple with some paint left over from the palette. I might return to it later, but I’ve already moved on to other sketches. I’ll be back next time with some more watercolors!
